Match Reports V Myrtleford: A
great day for the club when every junior team either won or drew – a rare
event!
Seniors
Won 5-0: A good all-round team performance with all
players having solid games. There was good pressure on our opponents and our
passing game was effective particularly in the second half. David Spokes and
Daniel Powell were strong at the back and the midfield of Kel, Giggsy, Kanners
and Possum worked well. Goals to Roberts’ (Tuksar and Tudor), Kanners and
Darrel Mills (2).
Reserves:
Won 2-0 on
forfeit: (When Myrtleford lost a carload of players). MOTM (Man of the
Mug), due to circumstances beyond our control Peter O’Riordan retains the Mug
via DQ. Therefore the Peter O’Meter for 2003 totals up to: 4 mentions (in the
newsletter) in 2 weeks, and Trevor’s Reserve games tally is yet to register a
score.
Ladies:
had a Bye
Thirds
Won 3-1: First win of the season. The team played
pretty well. Great goal from a free kick from Briggsy who hit it very sweetly.
Brendan Jones and Barry Coleman were rewarded for being on the spot by getting
the another goals. The coach was happy with this performance and expects the
improvement to continue. Reminder
-Thirds are the duty team next home game.
U/15's
Won 10–2: Boys won again. Finny was exceptional in
goals replacing Mark who was away. The boys stood up to replace Seato and
Briggsy and we discovered another goal scoring machine in David Myers who
bagged 5 goals. Daniel Foden scored his first in two years Matt T bagged a hat
trick and Ben P scored one. Well done boys on sticking to the game plan. The
results speak for themselves.
U/14's Won 4-3:
What a heartstopper! It was great to see commitment from the team. Their effort
this week was 200% on last week. Our players were often first to the ball,
marked and tackled effectively - though we need to get back more quickly to
stop the sudden breaks. There was overall more conviction, and we didn't fall
in a heap when Myrtleford scored two quick goals early in the second half to
level the score. (Of course it didn't hurt that several senior players, in the
new yellow and black caps, turned up to give some rowdy support!) No one
deserves special mention, as everyone played with the same spirit.
U/13’s Won 17-0: Well it was Hotspurs game, with a 17/0 against Myrtleford on Sunday. The girls and boys gave all what they had, with the new play tack ticks being tried out it shows what they can do.
With great passes by Paddy, Shannon,
Daniel, Ricky, Stuart, and Jessica, just to mention a few which helped our
stickers to score. Goals were from Stuart 5, Ricky 6, David 3, and Aras 3. This
week’s award went to Ricky.
Thanks goes to Kia for subbing for us. You
all played well keep it up.
Our guys continue to improve both individually and as a team, with an added level of desperation appearing in the game this year. The defence of Liam, Chris, Harry and Jarrod were placed under pressure by the counter-attacking opposition, but by working together, they snuffed out most sorties forward. On top of this they regularly ran the ball off their opposing player setting up attacking opportunities. The midfield of Kai, Michael, Peter had many telling possessions, constantly winning the ball and feeding the wings of Dan and Shaun who again this week worked overtime. Solid bustling work up front by Ollie and James provided opportunity, but alas to no avail this week. It was Kai who went through them like a dodgey vindaloo to give us our only goal of the day. In close matches like this, the goalies are under extra pressure, and ours, LOD and Jono rose to the occasion. A particular highlight being Jono’s last minute heroics throwing himself at the feet of the attacker in a one on one situation. A big welcome and congrats to ‘arry, making a particularly auspicious debut
Mystery of Life 1: that POD and Brains will be spending time to get the kids to talk to each other much more on the field, as this observer has noticed they never shutup at any other time. P.S. Massively huge thank you’s to Callan for running the line.
U/11’s
Won 1-0: I suppose a win is a win, but we must be
smart and don’t bring ourselves down to their level.
This means “no” individual play. This means pass and cross the ball at every opportunity.
It was a close game with great goalie work
by the opposition keeper denying us many goals with everybody trying to kick
the ball through him. Eventually a good goal to Eggy and later another
disallowed, bad luck!
Best on ground James Eggleston. Please note
the practice match against the U/10’s when we play Benalla. 8.30 kick off.
Under 10's Won 3-0: A
tough encounter against a very determined outfit neither team creating any
notable chances during a dour first half struggle. Half time 0-0
Some cracks in the Myrtleford defence
started to appear once Hotspurs started playing the ball wider and creating
more space as Myrtleford insisted on stacking their midfield. Max Humphries
opened the scoring after 7 minutes of the re-start driving home from the edge
of the area. The midfield of Will, Daniel, Tyla, Domenic, Junior and Dylan
working hard to split a very strong defence. Sam Cronin followed in a strong
shot to drive home a second while Max added a third to complete a workman like
performance. Our defence of Rebecca, Jocelyn, Ben and Phillip all lifted during
the second half to once again record a clean sheet. James Ellis was again
faultless as goalkeeper. Highlights - Jocelyns determined defensive effort to
thwart a certain Myrtleford breakaway on goal and Phillip Robbies fantastic
efforts in defence and midfield. Our next competitive game is in 5 weeks time
against Diamonds, when our run of tough games commences. We do have 2
friendlies organised.
Star player award - Phillip Robbie
