MATCH REPORTS

Under 10s V SS & A Won 6 - 0

Coming off a good win, Hotspurs were keen to cement their status as a team to be reckoned with, despite being a man down. The game commenced at a furious pace with Hotspurs peppering the goal twice within the first few minutes…only to be denied.

Five minutes in saw Daniel, Liam and Patrick combine well out of defence, giving off to Setter who pushed down the line before crossing to a queue of Hotspurs forwards, with Alexander slotting home a winner. An unlucky handball in the box gave the Boomers their only real shot on goal, but with Will Heath in the way, they never looked like converting. Not content to coast to half time, Michael continued to run the ball through the midfield, giving the forwards plenty of opportunities. Setter’s poster rebounded to Sam T, who promptly goaled. Two up at the break.

If the first half was like the promise of rain, the second half became a deluge. A cross from Setter was guided in deftly from the near post by Andrew (up from the U9’s), truly a shared goal if there ever was one. Minutes later, Andrew and Sam H combined with the goal post to see Sam score Hotspurs fourth! All along the defenders continued to block and repel any effort from the Boomers. The next two goals belonged to Sam T, combining first with Andrew and then with a nimble footed but footwear challenged Setter, that left the Hodges discussing who exactly had tightened the laces on the now missing left boot.

Final score 6 – 0 ..…a fine example of what 10 players (and 19 football boots) can achieve when you play as a team.

Under 11s V SS & A Won 10 - 1

With only 9 regulars due the mid-holidays weekend we were very lucky to be able to call up Sam Hodge, Sam Thorman and Will Setterfield from the 10s. Not having encountered an SS&A side in our 4 years of soccer, we were a little unsure of what to expect, though wary of the fact they were coming off 2 comfortable wins.
Ten minutes in and 6-0 up, we were running amok, with Gus Staples scoring twice in the first 90 seconds, follwed up by 3 goals to Jack day and another to Gus, all well fed in by Zac, Blake and Brewy. Will Nauer went close on two occasions, as did Brewy, before we lapsed at the back and conceded a soft goal to make it 6-1 at the citrus interval.
Playing against an inexperienced team and well up, our boys drifted away from the basics and got a bit goal hungry. Our good passing broke down until later in the game when we were able to string together some good passages of play, culminating in a 30 meter screamer from our right back, Dan Kipp, who had moved up to fill a gap in the midfield. Brandon narrowly missed with a
header before the final whistle called a halt to proceedings. Jack got 3 more to give him a well balanced 6 for the game - 3 in each half and 3 with each foot, whilst Gus bagged 3. Jacob Pargeter continued his impressive defensive work; meeting the ball first in disputed situations before adeptly passing to his teams advantage. Will Nauer made a great save in goals whilst all 3 boys from the Tens (Sam,Sam and Will) played great games, especially factoring in that they had played without subs in their previous game.
Thanks for helping us out boys.
The 10-1 win takes us to the top of the ladder, ahead of Albury City on goal difference (+5).
Goals: Jack Day 6, Gus Staples 3, Dan Kipp.

Under 12s V SS & A Won 5 - 2

"An excellent pitch and another bright sunny Sunday morning greeted Hotspurs for their anticipated clash at SS&A.
Hotspurs started well and were the first with a shot at goal when Esmond tried his luck but to no avail. It was to be the first of many shots for him, with the SS&A goalkeeper proving to be a nemesis on many occasions.
Both defences started the match strongly with shots from either side being restricted to long range. Esmond and Mark both had good shots but were left frustrated.
Just as it seemed the half was going to finish goalless, SS&A suddenly broke down their left side and the cross was finished at the back post. 0-1.
Hotspurs responded immediately and it took some good skill to open up the SS&A defence. Ryan S dribbled through the defence to set up Mark for a shot which the goal keeper looked like he had easily covered but somehow it ended up trickling over the line. 1-1.
Into the second half and again Esmond was denied by the goalkeeper - it didn't seem like it was going to be his day!
SS&A then had 10 minutes of constant pressure on the Hotspurs goal. Lucy saved the day on one occasion but eventually the ball broke in the penalty area and SS&A finished well. 1-2.
The goal made Hotspurs go back on attack and from close range the goalkeeper again stopped Esmond's shot. This didn't deter Esmond as the next time he got the ball he finally found a way past, smashing the ball from outside the area high into the net for an impressive equaliser. 2-2.
Again SS&A responded with pressure on the Hotspurs goal and looked certain to regain the lead when they got clean through but Isaac closed the angle and the shot just missed the post.
With Ryan S and Lucy brick walls in defence and Hotspurs attempting to break on the counter attack, Esmond was again denied by the goalkeeper and also by the line Esmond's flag. It wasn't long though until Hotspurs took the lead for the first time as great work from Ryan W and Esmond allowed Blake to turn brilliantly in the box and slot home. 3-2.
The chances were now coming thick and fast as SS&A tired. After a few near misses, Esmond broke free and finished off the goalkeeper for his second and Hotspurs fourth. 4-2.
Ryan W was making a big difference, with tireless runs on the right side after coming on as sub and he started the move that led to the final goal of the game. Cameron pushed forward and set up Esmond who slotted home for his hat-trick. 5-2 and a hard fought victory for the Hotspurs."

Under 12s Girls V Albury City Postponed

Under 13s V SS & A Lost 2 - 3

This match report is dedicated to Jack Percy, who quite seriously injured his wrist in a fall just minutes before the start of Sunday’s game. A progress report is not available at the time of going to press but we wish Jack a speedy recovery.

There was no Word of the Week this week so I decided on one myself. Your task is to work out what the word is. The task might be difficult so, while trying not to DUMB IT down too much, I have given some clues…..

On a glorious autumn day, certainly not a day for feeling GLUM, IT was a Hotspurs team missing their coach and several players, who took the field against SS&A. With Will Mollison standing in for coach Greg, and 4 players from previous matches – Sinead, Jack, Esmond, and Cam – Hotspurs U13s played out a tight and enthralling match and were gallant losers at 2-3.

The first half was characterised by solid defence by Chris Bridle and Ben Hoopell (in goal), some strong battling on the ball by Thomas S., and some creative team play where the players were prepared to pass wide or back. The Midfield – Nida, Jaimie, and Ezra - were starting to HUM. IT was, in fact, a left-midfield combo – Alex to Nida to Jaimie – that set up Tom Hodge for Spurs’ first goal. Both sides continued to have opportunities, and it was the efforts of the Spurs defence – Sinead, Ben, Chris, and Ben H. – that kept the score to 1-1 at half-time.

At half-time coach Will strove to DRUM IT into the team – let the ball do the work. Sinead came off and was replaced (belatedly!) by Cam, while our two key defenders – Chris and Ben H. –changed places, Chris going to goalie and Ben to centre-back. Spurs continued to dominate and certainly had opportunities: Jamie hit the left post after a long left-side run by Tom Hodge, and a great right-side run by Jack Day set up another (missed) chance to Alex. A corner to Spurs resulted in a second goal – an Alex toe-poke which was a reward for his persistence in the goal-mouth. Spurs, finding themselves at 2-2, conceded another goal, causing their supporters hopes to PLUMMET. The team continued to attack throughout the second half but the third goal refused to COME. IT was during yet another Spurs attack that the final whistle blew, leaving Spurs supporters NUMB. IT is a new experience for this team to lose!

To sum it up: a game of missed opportunities.

Score SS& A 3 – Hotspurs 2. Goals to Tom and Alex.

Highlights: some great goalkeeping by Ben H and Chris B, without which the scoreline would have been much worse.

Thanks to Will (coach), Sinead, Jack, Esmond, and Cam for helping out.

Under 14s Girls V SS & A BYE

Under 16s V SS & A Lost 0 6

Under 17s Girls V SS & A Lost 0 - 1

The girls started the game well, pressuring the opposition and trying to keep possession. they marked up well, cleared the ball out of defence quickly and kept the Boomers defence under pressure. We had a few shots on goal which was good to see.
In the second half the girls looked as though they were tiring but did their best to stay competitive. After a scramble in the box we luckily cleared the ball and it was looking as though it would be a draw but in the final minutes Boomers got a cross into an un-marked player and they managed to score.
Special mentions to Millie, Nicole, Mel and Skye who did fantastically in goals. Also a big thank you to Ricky, a great job by all girls.

Thirds V SS & A Lost 1 - 2

What drives a man to drink ? Coaching. Fielding on paper a fairly strong side and starting off well pushing the ball around and playing with some confidence our old bogey from last year reared its ugly head, lack of concentration and commitment. Boomers scored two goals one soft and the other by no one prepared to lay a tackle on a running player allowing someone to run from the halfway line and cruise through 5 players says it all. One bright moment was Eriks nice run and cross which somehow missed Jake and Jeremy managed to misskick and put in the net much to everyones delight. Erik proved this was not a fluke by doing exactly the same thing but with his right foot in the reserves with the same outcome a goal. Next week Twin City which should prove to be a much harder game.
