Albury Hotspurs v St Patricks–Sunday, 25 August 2002
Seniors v St Pats, won 2-0
Victory and a clean sheet at last. Well done team. Even without the
services of quality players Giles, Powell and McHugh our general play was good
enough to control the play and seal our first win in the last four matches.
Brett and Darrel scored our goals. Darrel was impressive at sweeper and Brett
and Tom Crossley worked very hard and were our best players.
Ladies v St Pats, won 6-0
The game of the
goal shooters, without a doubt. St Pats were young, fit and fast, hanging on to
the ball at least as often as we were. But what their
performance was missing was a few sensational goals. Enter Chappo & Chappo,
you guys played awesome! And great support from the wings, Zoe was having a
blinder, great calls from Al down the back...in truth, it was team work. Sincere
apologies are extended for any weeks that went by this season without a report
from the ladies. To get you up to speed, the team is undefeated with one more round
to go. A win in Myrtleford is high on the cards to confirm top spot on the
ladder. Enthusiastic supporters always welcome.
Thirds v St Pats, lost 0-1
Played well against the top team. Nearly equalised in the last minute
but Briggsy forgot to “BEND IT LIKE BECKHAM”. Rhys was great in goal and Tim
was solid at the back. Trevor run like a hare all game and Phil worked hard in
midfield. Thanks to Brad, Stan and Peter from the 15s who filled in in grand
style.
Under 15s v St Pats, won 8-1
The match began
playing against a St Pat's with the opposition fielding only 8 players, we
quickly slipped into a relaxed mode and before long were down one nil. This
goal and the arrival of the rest of the opposition inspired us to a higher
level, we soon got an equaliser through Ben Porter and a second goal by Luke
prior to half time. Ian made some inspired changes at half time, bringing Jonny
Seaton out of goals, his speed along with some good passing soon had the score
board ticking over, in the end we finished up with 8 goals, 3 to Luke, 2
to Seato, 2 to Stan and 1 to Ben. The game showed us how much we have
improved this year, it was only a few weeks ago that we struggled to beat
St Pat's one nil. Well done to all players, particularly the goal scorers from
the under 14s, other good players were Pat, Stan and Amy. Thanks also to
Mark Belgre for filling in as three regular under 15s were absent. We will need
to be at our best next Sunday to finish the year on a high note by beating
Myrtleford at Myrtleford, we can do it as United beat them last Sunday and we
know we can beat United, let's just do it and go into the 1st quarter final in
the right mood to beat probably Twin City.
Under 12s v St Pats, won 3-1
Well what a game it
was, every one gave their best. In the first we were a bit slack and Patties
scored. A pep talk by the coach and a few changes and the kids pulled up their
socks and got straight into it. David put our first goal on the board. There were
some hard tackles with Shannon putting down a player. With David, Caleb, Ricky,
Stuart trying to score, David found back of the net with a huge kick straight
into the goal. Our final goal came from a corner which didn’t look like
going in until Shannon knocked it in - her first goal for the season. Well done
by all, well done coach. Parents don’t forget RAFFLE TICKETS please.
Under 10s v St Pats, drew 1-1
On a perfect day
for soccer we started out defending with style. St Pats put us under a bit of
pressure early on in the game but with Adrian Ried in goal they were hard
pushed to get one past him. Our defensive skills have been honed this season
with Gena Furze and Phillip Robbie playing a major role. We did make a few
breaks with Skye Weston chasing the ball and worrying the opposition who did
manage to sneak one goal in. The second half was another matter, with a change
of line up and a pep talk from Peter the coach, we went out like a different
team, Patrick Lloyd-Donald was a tireless chaser of the ball. It had to come
and it did, from another run at goal by James Eggleston who shot at goal, the
keeper stopped it but Robert Gentle was just in the right place to put it in
the net. It was a good draw.
RESERVES
YEAR 2002 – Part II
As the 2002 season
heads towards the Cup Final Series, the Reserves team has cemented 5th
position on the ladder with Wangaratta being the team we play in the first
final. The reserves team form has dropped in recent weeks with wins harder to
come by. At the season’s halfway mark, Spurs were sitting second and had just
beaten Benalla 5-0, and were looking to consolidate their position on the
ladder against the bottom team in the competition, Lavington Panthers. A 1-1
draw was all the team could manage with Westy scoring a great goal.
Next to come was
Cobram at Cobram. The team played a scrappy game but came home with the 3
points after a 1-0 victory thanks to a nice Pearce goal. The following game was
against Albury City, a game which was the last of the year for Hamish Crawford
and Rob Hamilton who headed overseas for the remainder of the season. Hammo
finished off his season with a fine match winning goal while Wayno had earlier
chipped in with one of his own to give us a 2-1 victory.
Then next week saw
another victory, this time 3-0 against Wodonga Panthers. Jimmy Brodie scored a
nice double and Gunning scored one in his last game before he moved on to
greener pastures. The next game against Wodonga Diamonds was the start of an
extremely tough period for the team which was rapidly losing the depth that had
helped them get to 2nd on the ladder. We were beaten 3-0 against a
strong Diamonds outfit and then backed up on the following Wednesday night with
a terrible performance against Albury City, going down 4-0. The next Sunday saw
the team dig deep and we were unlucky not to get the points against the highly
fancied Wangaratta but unluckily lost 2-1. Jim Brodie again was on the scorers
list with the only goal.
The next match
against Twin City, the league leaders, was a hard fought 1-1 draw. This match
saw Trevor “Lumberjack” Dickinson make his debut for the Reserves this season
with a fine performance in the backline. Briggsy also made an appearance and
managed to get his head in the way of a terrific struck shot saving a certain
goal. Aaron Pearce scored our goal while Jono Corkett saved a penalty.
After several weeks
without a win the team finally snatched a victory against the in form Boomers.
4-3 was the score with Wayne McCloskey and Tom Crossley scoring with Aaron
Pearce picking up a double. Jono Corkett made some fine saves including an
amazing save from a penalty.
United was next up
and once again the team was unlucky going down 1-0 with a penalty awarded after
the full time whistle. Jono played brilliantly in goal again while James
Ricketts played a solid game in the middle of the park.
Our most recent
game against St. Pats saw the team go down 2-1. Adam Richardson and Dean Twist
both played great games on the wings while Aaron West played a tireless match
in the middle of the park. Jono Corkett again had a great game in goals. Justin
Wild scored the only goal finishing off a beautifully worked goal that featured
Jim Brodie and Mick Corkett in the build up.
Hopefully the last
game of the season before the finals can see the boys back on the winners list.
The game could also see the surprise return of one of the teams recently absent
players in a one off match. Don’t forget to get you nominations in for the
Dirty Dogg Award. So far the title is being fought out between Bones and Frank
Dogg, no reserves players have yet to mount challenge for the award.

Draw for Sunday 1st September.
All teams play Myrtleford in Myrtleford. The ground is at the Savoy Ground. Allow one hour from Albury for the trip.
Nines v TCW on Saturday at home.
