Albury Hotspurs v Albury
United–Sunday, August 18 2002
Thirds v United, drew 3-3
A strong game from the thirds-We came from behind twice to get a draw.
First goal by Johnny Belgre - was a bewdy! Scored from twenty metres into the
top corner. Finny was rewarded for his hard work with two goals. Briggsy and
Jonesy had strong games as did Phil Aitken. Tim Stuckey also played real well.
Hope Peter Robbie gets over his injury soon as he has been great for our team
all year. We play the top team this week- let’s enjoy the challenge!
Under 15s v United, drew 3-3
Last week’s game against SSA was embarrassing , even though we
scored a goal in a competitive first half. Thankfully we won’t have to
play them again this year unless we make the Grand Final. Playing against
United with our team missing Amy and Georgia, the under 15s played in fine
style against a good team vying for second spot. We defended stoutly in
the first half with Pat organising the backs intelligently from
sweeper, Briggsy then finished off a well developed goal to give us a
one nil lead. United got one back after a scramble in the goal area just
before half time. Ian made some positional changes at half time which resulted
in Stan sending in a great cross from a free kick, Pat did the rest heading the
ball past the keeper. From the kick off we lost our concentration for a couple
of minutes which let United get 2 quick goals to give them the lead 3 - 2. The
Hotspurs battled on well attacking from all angles, eventually
Briggsy popped the ball over the keepers head to earn us a well deserved
draw. Best players were Stan, Barry and Pat, thanks to Luke, Seato and Andrew
for filling in. We can look forward to St Pats next week, then a tough game
against Myrtleford, and then a semi against the second team. No matter who
comes second, they will be wary of a vastly improved Hotspur team.
Under 14s v United, won 3-0
The first half saw us with most of the play but
we couldn't finish off. It was nil all at half time and the boys knew
they had to pick up their games. Luke scored our first early in the
second half and we were off and running, Ben scored a lovely free kick and Luke
followed up with another goal and we were firing. Good team
play by all. Players are asked to turn up at game time this week as even
though we have a bye there will be training instead as our last game against Myrtleford
will be a tough one. Enjoy the movie!
Under 13s V United Lost 1-0
It's happened again! A loss by a solitary goal. This must be the
fourth time in succession that United has beaten us by one goal. And it
could easily have gone the other way. The boys played hard throughout the game
and we proved ourselves equal to a side who are much higher on the ladder than
us. The ball was in the right half for a lot of the match, but we were
unable to "finish off". All 16 of the Under 13s were there and,
as the coach said, they can all be proud of their effort on the day.
Todd and Alex made some heart-stopping saves. The backs were solid in defence -
Andrew deserves special mention. Midfield battled it out tirelessly.
Chris and Matt performed well on the left and right wings. The forwards
become more aggressive as the game progressed. Daniel got up close and personal
with the United goalkeeper once or twice. Keep the fire burning boys. You
were exciting to watch not just for some of the game but ALL of the game.
Under 12s v United, lost 0-5
Well girls and boys, another hard game .We just couldn’t find the back
of the net, thanks Kia for filling in for some kids who were away. Also thank
you to Geoff for doing the line. Awards went to Ricky and Caleb. Parents could
you please check with the manager about
match fees please.
Under 11s v United, lost 6-1
This was two games in one. The boys came
firing out of the blocks against one of the top teams in the competition, with
Kai Ward picking up an early goal after some great lead up work. The team
battled hard for the rest of the first half, keeping their dangerous forwards
at bay and having a few more chances themselves. The backs were playing
particularly well - with Liam O'Dwyer as keeper leading the way, Liam Ellis
playing a blinder at the back and Sean Dalitz also contributing up front.
Unfortunately, United scored an equaliser towards the end of the first half. United
came out a different team after half time, putting much greater pressure on our
halves and backs, and the goals started to come for them. Things were looking
grim. However, something clicked in the last five minutes, and the boys lifted
again - much to their credit - and battled hard for the rest of the game, even
taking a few shots of their own. Unfortunately, the score did not reflect the
game. As coach Peter said, "if only we could bottle what they showed
towards the end of the game!" A great effort in the end.
Under 10s v United, won 2-1
We pushed forward early in the
game but they came back with a counter attack that nearly took us off guard. We
conceded three corners in as many minutes. Our defence stood firm with Phillip
Robbie and Robert Gentle making sure the ball was cleared away. The ball was
again sent up towards the opposition’s goal with some accurate passing by Tom
Watson and good reading of the game by Aleki Ward, their goalie made a mistake
and one of their team scored an own goal. Chris Camby played some good
attacking soccer and kept the ball moving between our players. The second half
goal was a perfect set up, after a pass from Jake Gardiner, James Eggleston
kicked it home.
Under 9s v St Patricks, won 1-0
Another strong all around performance from the 9s who have now won
their last five games without conceding a goal. As we approach the
business end of the season with just the one game to go, a bye and a two point
lead at the top, it looks like going down to the wire in two weeks
time. Hotspurs once again dominated play from the outset, creating many
chances with some magnificent teamwork and strikes on goal. Our awesome defence
of Jocelyn, Ben, James and Rebecca all played solidly throughout the tense
battle. Some great build up work by the midfielders led to a fine strike
by Max midway through the half which was to be the only goal of the match.
Daniel, Tyla, Dominic, Michael and Dylan all working hard to win possession.
Max, Sam and Thomas all produced good shots on goal only to be denied by some
fine keeping. It was impressive to see the guys controlling the midfield
with some fine tackling and pin-point passing and crossing. Keep it up guys and
gals!
Next week: Bye. Star player awards: Daniel and Dylan for strong
performances while still recovering from illness.
Draw for Sunday 25th August. All
teams V St.Pats at Home except 14s have BYE
