Albury Hotspurs v Wodonga Diamonds–Sunday, July 21 2002
Seniors v Diamonds, lost 1-3
Not the result we were hoping
for as the championship slips out of our control. We now rely upon teams above
us to drop points and for us to regroup and start playing the way we did a few
weeks ago.
Ladies v Diamonds, won 3-0
A well contested match that tested the
depth of our team, but the result was very encouraging. The first goal was a
long time in the making, but it was sweet. Great finish by Amy. The second goal
was in the last half and was a bit contentious, but the third goal was a
convincing winner. Looking good, team, looking very good. DUTY TEAM is the
LADIES, Please be at grounds at 7-30am to help with nets.
Thirds v Diamonds, drew 0-0
Despite the scoreline this was
a good game. This team thrashed us in the first round and judging by their
disappointment at the end of this game, they expected to do it again. The Spurs
had 15 players who all contributed to a good performance. The defence was
outstanding with Rhys, Trevor, Tim and Briggsy doing really well. Jonesy worked
very hard as did Hugh and Finny. Let’s all show the same commitment again this
week.
Under 15s v SS&A, lost 0-9
After our problems last week
end we were virtually back to full strength and we started in a positive mood.
The first part of the game was even with the Hotspurs having a territorial
advantage, however, SS&A soon warmed up and by half time we were down 4 -
0. In the second half we were outplayed by a skilled and determined team and
finished up losing 9 - 0. At this stage of the year we are in 7th position and
looking good to avoid the dreaded 8th spot. We can look forward to an easier
assignment this week against St Pats. Best players were Stan, Amy and Josh,
thanks to Seato and Luke for filling in again.
Under 14s v Diamonds, won 1-0
The team played a good first
ten minutes when our goal was scored by Luke off a great pass from Ben and then
we all slackened off. We were extremely lucky to come away with a
win and will need to pick up our team play next week when we play top of the
ladder - Wangaratta. They are the only team that have beaten us this
season and we need to show them that we are just as good as them. Come on
Spurs we know you can do it!!
Junior Ladies, Forfeit
Due to a lack of players the
girls had to forfeit the match but played a friendly game with Twin City
helping us out with a few players for some much needed game practice.
Girls please try and turn up to training on Wednesday afternoons at 4.30pm as
we need all the practice we can get. Thanks to Emily, Erin, Kelly, Stephanie,
Jessica and Rebecca for playing and not getting discouraged.
Under 13s v Diamonds, lost 3-4
Foiled again in our attempt to
defeat our old foe Diamonds. We started strongly with two early goals from
Andrew (great finishing) and Zak (confirming that defenders can score goals).
After this we lapsed into our all too familiar "mid game slump" and
despite good work in midfield by Andrew, Glenn, Rob, Matt Reid and Daniel, our
defending was poor, allowing Diamonds to score the next four goals. We rallied
later in the second half to apply searing pressure on the opposition. This
resulted in a well struck goal from Daniel but was not enough to prevent
Diamonds from taking the points. Thanks to Alex who fought hard in goals and a
hard earned players award went to Andrew Lindsay. We will need to focus on much
tighter marking in defence and sharper finishing in front of goal to give
Wangaratta another scare next week (the way we know we can).
Under 11s v Diamonds, lost 0-4
Against such a well organised and
formidable opposition this was always going to be a tough encounter for our
physically smaller team. None the less the boys put up a creditable performance
and never gave up till the final whistle. Liam O'Dwyer in goals had a number of
fine saves keeping the opposition to a single goal in the second half. Best on
ground was Tim Holt with excellent efforts also from Liam Ellis (2) and Michael
Hawksworth (1). Nick Ridley, Jonny Lindsay and Daniel Ryan also had solid games
in defence. A much more even encounter is anticipated against Wangaratta in
Sunday's upcoming match at home.
Under 10s v Diamonds, lost 1-2
It was a cool start for the
game but we quickly got warmed up with a few shots at their goal. The ball went
from one end of the pitch to the other with Chris Camby reading the play very
well. Gina Furze and Emily Scott worked well, taking the ball off the Diamonds
team, foiling some of their attacks. Just after half time James Eggleston
scored our first goal. The second half saw us under a lot of attacking pressure
and our defences put up a wall around the goal. Patrick Lloyd Donald ran it out
a few times and with Tom Watson managed to clear it away. Diamonds did squeeze
in two goals just before the final whistle but as Peter said "It’s the
best we have played".
Under 9s v SS&A, won 2-0
A great result in very cold
and wet conditions at Aloysius Park against some formidable opposition. This
was our best team performance of the season with some magnificent ball control
and passing shown throughout the game in very difficult conditions. Max opened
the scoring after 10 minutes with a magnificent strike on the half volley from
10 metres after some great build up work from the midfield of Tyla, Dominic and
Dylan. Five minutes later we were in again, this time through a classy strike
from Daniel who turned and volleyed from the edge of the area to put the ball
into the top corner. Our defence of Ben, Rebecca, Jocelyn and James proved once
again how classy they were holding out all attempts from SS&A and supplying
the ball to the midfield for numerous raids on their defence. Once again we
bombarded their goal with shots from Sam Cronin and Dylan just shooting wide.
Thomas kept goal during the first half with little to do while Rebecca kept in
the second. Rebecca had the chance to slot home another from the penalty spot
when Thomas was felled towards the end of the game, but just shot wide. If we
can continue to produce this standard of play we will be pretty hard to stop
for the rest of the season. Star Player award: Tyla Windham for fantastic
corners and great work rate. Next
week v Wodonga panthers @ Diamond Park K.O. 11:30. Star player
awards: Humphries. Half time oranges: Windham
Under 9s v Lavington Panthers, lost 0-2 (13th July)
A very tough encounter against
the form team of the comp ended in a disappointing loss. We once again had all
the opportunities during a one sided first half with strikers Sam and Thomas
both hitting the post from close range. Tyla floated a pin point corner to
Daniel who powerfully headed towards a certain goal, only to be deflected for a
corner by a defender on the goal line. During the second half the entire team
slackened off their tackling, giving the Panthers just the two opportunities
which they gratefully accepted. Despite the loss there were some notable
performances: the defensive efforts of Jocelyn, Rebecca, James and Ben were
again outstanding with Rebecca not letting a player or ball past her for the
entire match. James Ellis kept goal well, while Tyla put in a big effort
despite suffering with a bout of the flu and having to keep goal in the second
half. Dominic and Dylan also performing well for the midfield producing several
great tackles and passes. We will hopefully be back to full strength for our
crucial clash with SS & A next week. Star player award - James Ellis for
goalkeeping and defensive work.
