Albury Hotspurs v Wodonga Panthers–Sunday, July 14 2002

Seniors v Wodonga Panthers, won 5-3

It was good to run and have a run for the running and will lead us into the week ahead of three matches in eight days. We cannot rely on Milli Vanilli if we wish to accomplish great things. The time has come for good individuals to unit and become the great team it can be.

Thirds v W.Panthers, won 2-0

A good effort by everyone in our first game for three weeks. A solid defensive effort with Rhys, Will and Trevor doing a good job at the back. Briggsy scored from a well taken penalty and then disappeared with the team pizza. Hugh and Johnny played well in midfield. Upfront Peter scored a really good goal and nearly got a couple of others. Overall a good result.

Junior Ladies v Wangaratta, lost 5-1

The game didn't start well with only 7 Hotspurs girls on the field.  Wang, of course dominated the first 15 minutes until they kindly offered us two of their players.  This made the game a lot more even and our combination of Jess & Shannon finally put our girls on the scoreboard with our first goal of the season - hurray!!  Emily, Rebecca and Kelly didn't stop running in the backline and Stephanie and Laura tirelessly worked in the midfield.  The girls are improving each week and it is good to see that they haven't lost their enjoyment of the game.  The referee was also very encouraging to the girls and was impressed with our youngest member of the team Bec who never gives up.  Keep it up girls.

Under 15s v Albury United, won 3 - 2

The middle weekend of the school holidays left us desperately short of player with 5 regular players out, however we were bolstered by 2 new recruits, Stan and Barry, so a big welcome to the two. We were also helped out by the regular four under 14s, Luke, Seato, Mark and David. Fortunately United were worse than us as they had 8 players out which left them fielding a team of 8 players. The numerical advantage we had almost did not make up for the way we played, we were like sleepy bears awakening from a long hibernation, no talking, no team work and lots of silly mistakes. At half time we were fortunate to be up 2 - 0 due to goals by Stan and Josh, after half time we did not improve even after the encouraging words by the coach, before long United had leveled the score at 2 all and we looked like losers, fortunately Josh was able to squeeze in a late goal to give us an unlikely win. No doubt training will help revive our holidaying players who must improve dramatically next week to be competitive.

Under 14 Hotspurs v W.Panthers, won 5-1

Not a bad result considering coach Pete was on holidays and we didn't train last week.  The team took a while to get working together and we had plenty of shots on goal with a few near misses.  A lapse in concentration and communication saw them get through our defence.  Goals to Paynter, Seato and Briggsy 3.  We have three big games ahead of us now so we can't afford to take it easy. Well done Briggsy on being a member of the Under 14 SAW Rep team that were successful in winning the Vic. Country Championships in Geelong.

Under 12s v W.Panthers, won 8-0

Once again a great game to watch with pressure from both teams. Fantastic team work was shown by the kids, they all had a chance to shoot for goals. Goals by David 2,Caleb 2,Aras 2,Steven 1,Daniel and tries at goals were Shannon, Jess, Brad and Paddy. We changed the back line around to give the other kids a chance to score. The awards went to Brad for best on the ground and coach award to Shannon well (bully always knocking over the other team). By the way it`s Shannon`s birthday on the 16/0702. Thank you Kia and Tim for playing for us.

Under 11s v W.Panthers, won 3-1

The team started as they should this week, with the boys' minds on the job. Maybe it was the lack of warm-up - a clever ploy by the coach to trick players and supporters! The first half saw some great play up front, with excellent passing and teamwork leading to three early goals, two to Kai Ward and one to Tim Holt. This included a screamer which saw Kai head the ball into the back of the net from a bullet-like Tim Holt cross. Of course, the coach took credit for the set play. The second half saw the opposition claw their way back into the match with a goal early in the session. Although Hotspurs still had numerous breaks up front, they just could not convert them into scores. This included Shaun Dalitz continuing to take layers of paint off goal posts with his unlucky long-range strikes.

Shaun was rewarded, however, with best-on-ground for his long runs down the wing, excellent crosses and dogged defence. Johnny Lindsay received two points for never stopping up front, while Liam O'Dwyer played his usual rock solid defence and excellent through-balls - in goals and on the field. Nick Ridley also received the Coach's Award for a top effort, playing his best game so far this season. A well-deserved win, though it could have been by more! Well done boys and keep up the strong play.

Under 9s v Diamonds, won 6-1 (previous week)

A welcome return to form for the under 9s in very bleak conditions at Diamond Park. It was great to have Sam Cronin and Daniel back from injuries, both contributing strongly to the team’s performance. A big thank-you to Phillip Robbie from the under 10s who filled in due to school holiday absences. Some great teamwork during a first half blitz resulted in a 4-0 scoreline with Thomas Schultz bagging a classy hat-trick and Fill in Phillip scoring the other after some great passing from the midfield of Dylan, Michael, and Max. Our defence of Ben and Jocelyn slackened off during the second half after a faultless first half when Ben moved up field to the strikers role and coolly slotted another past their keeper after a nice pass from Daniel. Daniel scoring himself a few minutes later with an unselfish pass from Sam Cronin put him through with only the keeper to beat. Domenic kept goal superbly in the first half saving a bullet shot from their striker at point blank range. A great team effort from all. Thank-you to Steve Foden for refereeing at the last minute as the referee failed to appear. Star player award - Sam Cronin for setting up goal opportunities for fellow strikers.
