ON WATER- Albury Hotspurs v Cobram–Sunday, June 23, 2002 A great atmosphere greeted the players
on Wednesday evening at Jelbart park, nobody there but us. When Cobram did
arrive and the game started we knew we should beat them easily although our
first five shots went wide and over we finally got on the board and went to
the break three goals to the good. The second half we continued to dominate
and run out comfortable winners. Goal scorers were, Robert (3), Darrel (2),
Brett, Daniel, Ryan and Kelvin. Not a very good performance but with a
bit of luck and some dogged determination we got the all important three
points to keep us at the top of the table. A few players dropped their
heads when things didn’t go their way and the coach is not very pleased
with that attitude. We need work hard on making things happen for the team
so we as a team can achieve what we know is possible, winning the championship.
We are at a most crucial part of the season and need to play well in next
few games, Albury City, Wodonga Panthers and Diamonds. LET’S DO IT! NO REGRETS! Great ground, great score. No question
as to who the better team was, with Hotspurs having majority of the ball.
Great passages of play seen particularly down the right wing led to some
super crosses, finished off by the eager attack. A tough Hotspurs defence
didn't allow much to get past with great skills and experience from Mandy,
and Em having a champion of a game. And what greater A terrible first half saw us 5-1 down at half time. The team
was not picking up their players and were letting
the opposition run wild. An inspirational lecture by Pete saw a
different team take the field after half time. Our backline &
midfield started to play as a team and we were able to keep them scoreless
in the second half and score four goals of our own. Luke 4 goals and
Ben 1 goal. We cannot afford to let these good teams get a break on
us early in the game - we could have won this game if we had played a full
team game!! Under 13s v Cobram lost 8-2 Once again, the game started badly for
us in the first half - we had a lot of difficulty adapting to the crowded
pitch. However, the boys listened to the coach's half-time rev-up
about forcing Cobram offside, and played a much better second
half. Though the score got harder to peg back, the team did not give up and
played competitively to the end of the match. Luke pushed hard throughout
the match and earned the coach's award. Sam was strong in centre back
position and Andrew scored both our much-appreciated goals. Alex also
had a good game and Todd did well under a lot of pressure. Well done
to the whole team. Good game boy`s & girls , you never
gave up the chase . There were a lot of attempts to
put the ball away and David finally found the back of the net. Thank you to Kia for filling due to
some of the kids being away. Tom did a great job in goals to keep score
down to what it was. This match was always going to be a
tough encounter against the undefeated City. Hotspurs turned in their
performance of the season against some good opposition despite the absence
of Sam Cronin (collar bone) and Daniel (ankle). The match was end-to-end stuff
with City taking their one chance for the match and Hotspurs failing to put
away numerous chances. The defence from Rebecca, Jocelyn,
James (best game of the season) and Ben was superb, thwarting all attacks
by City to get a shot on goal. The only goal of the match came from a
dubious free kick for a handball which a City player drove directly in.
From then on it was one-way traffic as Hotspurs spread the ball across the
pitch in a great display of attacking soccer. Tyla was magnificent
supplying pass after pass to the strikers while Dylan, Michael and Thomas
worked tirelessly in the midfield. Our strike force of Max and Sam Gunning
created some great opportunities and shots at goal but luck was not on our
side as we just couldn’t find the back of the net. We need to follow up on
our shots at goal as keepers sometimes drop the ball or cannot handle it
well. Domenic performed well in goal with some great long clearances. It
was impressive to see all the players lift their work rates when required
and not drop heads. A great team effort guys. Star player award: Sam Gunning for creating space,
opportunities and high work rate. Next week: v Albury City @ Home. K.O.
