Albury Hotspurs v Albury United –Sunday, May 19, 2002
It has been really pleasing to see the
amount of support the Seniors have been getting at their games. Lots of junior
players and their parents spurring them on. It made a real difference on
Sunday as the boys played their best game of the year against the old enemy!
Great wins by the Reserves and the Ladies as well.
What a great
win! Again we started slowly however, the intensity lifted once we were a goal
down we started to play some determined soccer, and went to half time at 1-1
all. In the second half we had the
majority of the play and finally got the winning goal thanks to a Georgia
corner and a united players’ head. Everyone played a great game.
Did not play as well as we can. But we never gave up and snatched a draw with 30 seconds to go. Tim Stuckey got the goal and it capped of a good game from him. John Belgre got another top goal after great lead up work from Brendan Jones. Thanks to Phil Aitken and Peter Robbie for playing so well in goals.
Under
14s v United won 1-0
What a stressful game! We had 98% of the play and about 20 shots for goal but due to a great goalkeeper for United the ball would not go in the back of the net. At half time it was nil all and the team were quite frustrated. The team seemed to start off a bit flat in the second half and then panicked that time was running out (there was still 15 min left). Finally in the last five seconds of the game a cross from Matty Paynter to Luke was finally slotted in. The parents and coach were ecstatic after gaining many grey hairs during the match and the referee blew his whistle for the game over. This game showed the team that they need to talk to each other on the field, concentrate on passing to our players and don't give up!
A reminder that this week's game is a bye and that the following week we are at home and are on duty. This means that we need parents to help set up the nets at 7.30am and take them down at the conclusion of the Seniors game. Also any help in the canteen would be appreciated.
A gallant performance from a side starting
to show some much anticipated improvement in form against the top sides. A very
even first half saw SS&A take the lead as a result of some poor work in
defence. Instead of dropping our heads (as has happened in past matches), we
battled hard & equalised before half time. In the second half we showed as
much determination as the first but unfortunately SS&A managed to score a
second goal & we were unable to, although we did create several good
opportunities.
All in all a very entertaining game. Good games to Alex in goals, Sam Wallace, Matt Reid & Michael Tink.
Under 12's Lost 1-7
It was never going to be an easy game with Caleb,
Ricky and Stuart out. United had some speed in their attack and put us under a
lot of pressure in the first half. Jazz did a great job keeping their score
down to three with some cat-like saves. An unlucky break early in the second
half saw us drop another goal and from there it was too far back. Not that they
had it all their own way, some great runs down the right by David set up a goal
for Kai who narrowly missed a second shortly after. The team showed great
spirit and we never gave up - we scored when we were 6 down and looked
dangerous in the last ten minutes. Solid efforts in defence from Zac, Brad,
Paddy and Stephen. Sterling efforts from Shannon and Tom who won awards. Thanks
for helping out Kai. Finally well run David and Aras, who played a lot of
soccer on Saturday. They both made it to selection for the North-East Victorian
Primary School Rep team. Both progressed to the final 22 (out of 56) and David
was selected for the squad.
With the threat of a downpour we took control of the game right from the start. The forwards kept the ball in their half and kept pushing towards their goal. When the ball did get into our half Tom Watson and Phillip Robbie cleared it away with precision. Our passing between players has improved and it showed with a beautiful pass to Blake Schroeter who scored the first goal of the match. James Eggleston made some first class strikes at their goal but Chris Wright ran forever to score the second goal just seconds before half time. Our defence was put to the test in the second half and United managed to sneak one in. The end result tells it all, a well deserved win for Hotspurs.
Just one look at the score line indicates this to be a very one sided match, which really only gave the team some shooting practice against an opposition with very little experience. Hotspurs opened the scoring after just 30 seconds after some slick passing saw Sam Gunning slot home his first goal. The defence of Rebecca, Jocelyn, James and Ben was once again inpenetrable with some strong tackling by all. There was some great ball passing throughout whilst good positional play created many, many chances for the strikers and midfielders who all got into the goal spree. Tyler, Daniel, Domenic, Thomas and Michael continually supplying some great through balls to the strike force of Sam Cronin, Sam Gunning and Max who all had many shots on goal. Goal scorers were: Daniel (5), Max (4), Sam Gunning (3), Tyler and Ben. We will need to get "back to earth" next week as we play an undefeated Twin City.
Next week: V Twin City Wanderers (blue) @ Diamond Park, Kick off 11:30am. Oranges - Bartram, Star Player awards - Schultz.
