Albury Hotspurs v SS&ASunday, May 12, 2002

Seniors v SS&A drew 2-2, Daniel Powell scored both goals. Seniors v Lavington Panthers lost 1-3 (Wed 8th May).

Women v SSA 3-3 draw

It is always a testing game when Spurs and Boomers meet and this top of the table clash was no different. After a slow start resulting in being 2 goals down in the first 15 minutes. we quickly got back into the game thanks to a great play and goals by Jess and Amy. Amy’s second goal early in the second half put us in great position however, we were unable to hang on to the lead. It was by far our toughest match of the season and I am sure everyone is carrying a few bruises. Special mention to Viv who made her long awaited return and played a great game, Mia for marking Jill and the Chapos’ for their tireless efforts.

Thirds v SS&A won 1-0

A very satisfying result as many in this team have never ever beaten SSA before. A great team effort spurred on by a classic goal by Johnny Belgre early in the game. Trevor and Tim were tough and tight at the back. Phil and Briggsy were creative in midfield while Jonesy and Hugh were solid and workmanlike. Rhys was confident and safe in goal. Finny was sick but made a great contribution. The old boys Pete, Pete and Will held it together like cement. Even the manager did a good job! Keep it up!

Under 15 Girls v SS&A Lost 4-0

The first official game for the girls this year saw us up against an opposition with a full team and subs with us only fielding 7 players  (one an  Under 9 player). Our girls played wonderfully and never gave up considering S.S. & A had subs and we didn't.  Our backline of Emily, Rebecca & Kelly tirelessly fought hard to win the ball with Jessica, Casey, Erin & Shannon in the midfield & forward line trying to get through their defence.  We had an opportunity to score on a penalty but unfortunately the goalie saved it. Great game in goals Shannon & Casey.  Keep your heads up girls hopefully we will have some more players in the next few weeks.

Under 14 v SS&A Won 10-0

What a great result!   The team showed that their hard work at training and communication on the field can prove wonders.  With great team play all over the park we were 8 - 0 up at half time to a team who usually causes us a few problems.  They came back at us in the second half but we managed to keep them scoreless and score another two goals.  Goals to Simon, Ben, Seato, Mitch & Paynter 2 and Briggsy 3. Great play by all the team, keep up the good work. Just a reminder that Peter wants all the players to stay and watch the Seniors against United this week.

Under 13s v Twin City Wanderers, won 6-1

A committed start to the game which saw us take early control and we were able to convert several of our opportunities. The boys then fell into their usual mid-match slump and allowed the opposition to get back into the game. As a consequence of this TCW scored. Luckily we snapped out of this and were able to get back into the groove and score several more goals to clinch a convincing victory. Goods games from James Gordon, James Heath, Rob Hawkesworth & Matt Townsend.

Under 11s v SS&A, won 3-2

A very exciting game from the start to finish. Plenty of good creative passing from both teams. All three goals for Spurs were scored by best-on-ground Tim Holt. Other vote winners were Shaun Dalitz (with quality crosses to keep both sides on their toes!) and Chris Beasant with his ever reliable left fullback play and a couple of great runs when they were most needed. Great goal keeping by Liam O'Dwyer saw us secure the full points. Well done everybody!

Under 10s v SS&A lost 0-4

We started off very well with good attacking play, the ball was in their half for the first ten minutes of the game. Patrick Lloyd-Donald made tackling look easy. SS&A did make a few runs at goal and eventually scored. The second half put pressure on our defence but Robert Gentle cleared the ball more than once and Skye Weston was a good all round team player for us. A few of our players came into the game with injuries which meant we weren’t at full strength but we played well even though we eventually went down at the final whistle.

Under 9's v Wodonga Panthers, Won 4-0

An improved performance this week with our first full strength squad as we welcomed back our defensive general Rebecca. The team appeared to be following on from the end of last week’s match as they struggled to penetrate a very determined and defensive Panthers, who continually flooded their defence without crossing the half-way line! However the team remained patient and a goal finally came with Daniel driving home a penalty just before the break. Tyler, Michael, Dylan and Thomas dominated the midfield with good tackling and positional play. During the second half the relentless pressure started to tell as the Hotspurs started spreading the ball to the flanks and creating a lot more space in the midfield and consequently up front, with Daniel blasting home another from a good build up and then Thomas blasted a great shot into the top of the goal after the goalie failed to hold another shot from Sam Cronin. Our best goal this season (to date) commenced with a majestic pass from Daniel deep in defence down the right flank to Sam Cronin who zipped between two defenders and crossed perfectly to Sam Gunning who drove the ball into the corner of the goal.

Jocelyn and Domenic both kept goal well, while our defence this week was outstanding. Rebecca, Jocelyn, Ben and James (strong tackling) all stuck to thier postitions winning tackles, calling for the ball and supplying the midfield. Max (great work rate), and the two Sams all worked well as strikers creating some spectacular shooting on goal. Great to see Michael and Dylan getting more involved with some great tackling. Keep up the improvement rate team.

Player award to Michael Johnson for improved tackling and positional play.

Next week: v SS&A @ home, 12:20 kick off. Oranges - Caldwell, Star player award - Ellis
