Albury Hotspurs v Twin City Wanderers Sunday, May 5, 2002

Seniors v TCW won 4-3

Another very entertaining match for the Hotspurs’ supporters. The first half we created several good chancers to score and should've put at least four in by half-time but only managed one from Robert. TCW got a penalty to open the scoring in the first half and then got another that was doubtful, however they put both away and lead at half-time two goals to one. Yet again we had a player sent from the field and were reduced to 10 v 11. The guys kept playing with great determination and were rewarded by a goal from the outstanding Robert Tuksar. Wayne came on for Ben in the second-half and pushed forward as much as possible when a ball fell for him in the box and he pounced on it to score our third and give Spurs the lead. The team didn't sit on the one goal lead and created more scoring opportunities and eventually Brett McRitchie slotted our fourth. TCW managed to get a late goal but a well-earned victory went to the Spurs. Robert and Brett were outstanding up front and Daniel had another fine game playing at sweeper.

It's good to have such a large squad to pick from, as we will have people away, suspended and injures will accur. Both the senior coaches thank the players for being understanding and willing to be subs and rotate to give all a fair go.

Women v Twin City Wanderers, won 5-0

It was a great 5-0 win with everyone playing well. Special mention to Georgia for her exceptional play and sensational goal. The other scores were Amy x  2, Mia and Jess. The team is starting to gel, which puts us in a good position for the tough game next week. We wish all the best to Kristen and hope she is feeling better. Also CONGRATULATIONS to Diahann and Tony on the safe arrival of Harrison Philip. We hope to see you back in the a few weeks with the next generation of Spurs.

Thirds v Twin City Wanderers, lost 0-4

Our second half was better than the first half. We have to concentrate and put in for the whole game. Daniel Briggs and Trevor Dickinson played well after they warmed-up. Tim Stuckey was solid when he came on - but the star was GK

Rhys (he had plenty to do!) who played a brilliant game.

Under 15s v Twin City Wanderers, lost 0-3

After a long time getting a game the 15s started off in fine style, the first half was even with both teams having several shots at goal but good saving by the keepers kept the score at 0 - 0. After half-time Twin City got the benefit of a couple of lucky goals, this along with a lack of match fitness took the fire out of the Hotspurs. We eventually lost 3 - 0, however, a lot of positives came out of the game, we will be a very competitive side during the year with several players having good games on Sunday, a special mention to Amy and Georgia for their non stop efforts and to Tom Hawksworth who had the tough job of keeping the star Twin City player quiet all day. Also thanks to the reserves from the 13s and 14s who filled in capably.

Under 14s v Twin City Wanderers, draw 2 - 2

The team started the game well with an early goal by Luke.  As a result of this we seemed to drop our game and take it easy and Twin City equalised before half-time.  Early in the second half a free kick to Luke resulted in a goal to Jake and we were up 2-1.  This lifted our game briefly.  Later in the half we seemed to let them back into the game with poor marking and defence and they equalised.  Our fitness seems to be lacking and in the past two weeks has really shown in the second half.  Some great saves again by Mark.  Come on Spurs we know you can play better as a team with a bit more communication and hard work!

Under 13s v Twin City Wanderers, won 6-1

A committed start to the game which saw us take early control and we were able to convert several of our opportunities. The boys then fell into their usual mid match slump and allowed the opposition to get back into the game. As a consequence of this TCW scored. Luckily we snapped out of this and were able to get back into the groove and score several more goals to clinch a convincing victory. Goods games from James Gordon, James Heath, Rob Hawkesworth & Matt Townsend.

Under 10s v Twin City Wanderers, lost 0-3
It was another perfect morning for soccer and we were all keen. We had a full team and three substitutes to give the players a rest in turn. Our defence was put under a lot of pressure early on in the game, Aleki Ward took the ball off the attacking players with some classy tackling and even then, they managed to score. We had a few good runs at their goal with James Eggleston having a good shot, but their goalie was in the way. Again our defence showed its strength with Emily Scott tireless in her efforts to win the ball from the other team.

Hotspurs Under 9s v SS&A, drew 2-2

A disappointing result in a dour struggle against a determined SS and A who never gave up. Hotspurs were hard hit prior to the start of the game with Daniel taken out due to illness and Rebecca still unavailable. The team tried very hard to spread the ball but was restricted by the opposition. Tyler put in another sterling performance throughout the game, setting up several chances for the strikers. It wasn’t until almost half time that Sam Cronin latched onto a classy cross from Max that Spurs started to show any cohesion and coolly slotted home a goal from close range. We were on target again immediately after half-time, this time it was the other Sam (Gunning) driving home another to give us a good lead. Max played brilliantly up front creating several other chances, which we failed to capitalise on. Thomas, Domenic and Dylan all worked hard in the midfield, while Michael, Jocelyn, Ben and James defended well. The turning point of the game came with just 10 minutes to go. Several tactical moves by the coach misfiring allowed SS and A to score two quick goals and only a great save by Ben in goal kept us alive in the game.

Players award  - Domenic Caldwell for a great work rate and positional play

Next week: v Wodonga Panthers @ Kelly Park, Wodonga 12:20 kick off. Oranges - Clements, Star player awards- Briggs
