Seniors v SS&A won 3-1
We started the game poorly. Our midfield and defence were a yard or two behind our opponent. After an early chance for SS&A was cleared by Munge with a touch of handball, Brendan was sent from the field and SS&A scored from the spot. The coach then bought young Tom Crossley in from the right midfield to mark up at the back and Tom had an excellent game in that position. We soon started to control the play and equalised from a long throw from Darrel, flicked on by Rob and finished off by Ryan. The second half we once again controlled most of the play even with our 10 against their 11. Darrel crossed from the left and Ryan diving forward headed the ball into the right corner from just inside the box. Our third goal came when Brett skun their defence on the right and crossed to the back post where Darrel headed it home. Three goals all headers, very unusual indeed. Nat had another strong performance in goals and was unlucky not to have saved the penalty.
Ladies v SS&A won 2-1
Wow, was that a match or was that a match?! Everything that we anticipated it to be. A great attacking attitude for the first half led to 2 goals being kicked for Hotspurs, both off the boot of Amy. Back on the field after a much needed breather at half time, we were a bit slow in getting back into it. A goal was conceded, but thankfully just the one, and all further attempts by SSA were thwarted by the defence. Truly a great result, one we can all be happy with. A big cheer for Darella and her efforts all game, you became the second shadow she never wanted! Great to see you back in goals Al, thanks Fiona for keeping the gloves warm (and all those potential goals out of the net!). Yay to Sarah K for getting back in town for one of our most important matches this season, we love your work!
Thirds v SS&A drew 1-1
The undefeated streak rolls on, 12 points in 7 games with a hard fought draw against the top team SS & A Boomers. We got off to a slow start, an early goal against us, unable to keep control of the ball and lack of communication during a poor first half. After inspiring words from Coach Pete during the break, we were able to send the opposition into panic mode creating numerous chances then eventually slotting one in from Mick Corkett. As Will Mollison said after the game "We just killed them in the second half if we had an extra 10 mins we would have gotten the winning goal, if we played like that for the full game we would have beaten them by more than one goal". Thanks to Briggsy and Phil for backing up.
Under 13s v SS&A 3-2
What a gutsy performance. We were down all day and in the last minute of the game snatched victory from a side that probably thought that they had done more than enough to win on the day. An early goal in the first half saw SS&A take the lead only to see Luke Briggs beat two defenders and place a perfect shot into the top right of the goals. The rest of the first half saw rather sloppy soccer from both teams. Boomers re-took the lead in the 7th minute of the second half. A long shot sailed over Mark’s head and left our players wondering how a shot from 45m out could go in. For the next 20 minutes we virtually placed a full court press on the SS&A. We struggled to create space in the centre for Luke and we could not get a clear shot on goals. We had to create that space. We moved Luke from striker to midfield and pushed Ben up the field into the striker’s position. SS&A kept the three players marking Luke and allowed Ben the freedom of a single marker. They paid the price 10 minutes later when Ben stuck an equaliser. By now the entire team was hungry for the win and set about going in for the kill. With a minute to go Ben took a corner kick from the right side of the field, Seato caught the ball in between his legs. The ball came out to Luke and he belted it back from 6 yards it still didn't want to go in. Then there appeared the smallest of gaps, Seato lined up the ball and managed to get his toe to it and shoved it through the hole and over the line. All of the side celebrated as they punched the air with their fists. It had been a huge effort to penetrate and win after chasing all day. Well done to all it was a great effort.
Under 10s v SS&A lost 1-2
Great runs up the left side of the field with superb passing, as taught. Unfortunately, S.S.&A had a very fast and fabulous defence and once up the field, they couldn't break through and score a goal. Once again Kai Ward absolutely outstanding in mid field and Liam Ellis also slotting into mid field well, feeding the forwards the ball and backing up the forwards and also helping in defence. Good play from Daniel Ryan also. Even though we lost the passing was great to watch.
Under 9s
Hotspurs Black v Diamonds won 2-1
This was a hard-earned win as the team had three strong players missing and there were no reserves. Needless to say, the team were all played out at full time. Phillip Robbie was a tower of strength, scoring our two convincing goals. Both Tyler and Sam C. were great in goals, frustrating the Diamonds' attempts to equalise. The goalies were well supported, especially in the first half, by our backs Julie, Thomas and Gina. (It will be hard to forget Thomas' great header). A big effort from the whole team.
Hotspurs Gold v Albury City won 2-0
A good win by the Golden Spurs created by some great build up work by the entire team, with some great passages of play. Despite numerous opportunities in the first half our finishing once again let us down, with the only first half goal scored by a tireless James Eggleston who slotted home during a goal mouth scramble. Our defence was once again our strength with Ben, Brent James Ellis and Rebecca all performing strongly to prevent City having any attempts on goal during the entire match, leaving our goalies Ben and Patrick with very little to do!!
Our only second half goal was scored from the spot by Chris Wright who drove home strongly. Daniel, Max, Chris Cambey and Isabella all worked hard in the midfield creating many chances. Jake, Chris Wright and James Ellis all had shots on goal thwarted by City’s magnificent goalie who even saved another powerful penalty shot from Daniel. It was pleasing to see much improved tackling, passing and positional play. Keep up the good work. Another tough game next week V Twin City.
